That was near Laredo (that is fairly southern for Texas, isn't it). I may have seen one in Arizona after that but do not remember right now for sure the timing on that one. They are, in my eye, the most beautiful cat of all. I can imagine the fear you felt, as a 6 year old, seeing one so close although I think an adult, who knew more about them, might have been more scared. Seeing one of these cats, in the wild, is cetainly a treat that not too many people ever get. I have been blessed in that regard. I have seen them in Arizona, Nevada, Texas and once in Florida.
