Poor old Bach...

He's never going to make any money at this rate.

Couldn't turn down this one, even though I'm not a really big fan of classical. And I'm always ready for more "dark" music. Finally a full version of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, and Saint-Saƫns "Danse Macabre"! I remember hearing a very abbreviated version of that used as the theme music for Jonathan Creek and I went around humming it to myself for days afterward.

One commenter said it totals 11 hours of music and slightly over a gig of disk space. Ye gads. The only drawback is, I betcha they don't have the files tagged with composer information. I'm going to be doing a lot of Wiki-ing for composers in the next few days.

  1. There's some good stuff on there, and I actually own most of those through individual purchases of the pieces. If you are not really into classical music yet, this is a good jumping off point because it gives you samples of some really great musical works. Just find something you really like, and go ahead and get a CD or MP3 of the whole piece. Most times you will not be disappointed.

I really like 93, The Coriolan Overture (Beethoven); 17, the Dies Irae and Tuba Mirum from Verdi's Requiem; and the two from Peer Gynt (Grieg) as well as several others. But I do question the inclusion of some of these pieces on a collection that is supposed to be "dark".

"Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy"? "Neptune, the Mystic"? Really? Dark?

    I think not.

  2. I do already have a stack of classical albums, both records and CDs. I just never have been able to develop much of a taste for most of it.

  3. You might want to try some stuff by the Trans Sylvanian Orchestra; they do rock versions of classical pieces. See how you like this one:

  4. Bob, I think you mean Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Yes, I'm somewhat familiar with their work.

  5. The Trans-Siberian Orchestra grew out of a heavy metal band from the 80s and 90s.

  6. No, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra is not the same; I have music from both.

  7. Ok, thanks for that clarification.
