When I first saw that episode of TNG, I thought it was a very interesting concept. But, the more I thought about it, the sillier it seemed.
Because all language starts as metaphor. Trace any etymology back far enough and you will find figurative language used to describe concrete objects and specific concepts. Surely Picard could have seen that. After all, I figured that much out.
