Of course this immediately makes me think that there's a really good reason, such as: some prominent person who is alive today would be embarrassed by the information in these documents.

  1. Of course that suggests that Scotland Yard back then actually had a pretty good idea who Jack the Ripper was, and that person was from a family prominent enough to make the police reluctant to bring them in.

    That would be more embarrassing, for the nation as a whole.
