Who'd a thunk it?

Today someone complained to me that he didn't have water. So I asked the most obvious question: "Did you leave any water running last night?"

"No," he said. "I'm from Chicago, so I figured since it was only getting down to 20 degrees, I wouldn't need to."

I tried to explain to him as politely and diplomatically as I could that once the temperature gets below freezing, water will freeze, no matter where you're from.

Apparently 20 degrees in Chicago is warmer than 20 degrees in San Antonio. How 'bout that.

  1. "I'm from Chicago."

I guess that fixes a lot of things for him. Except Super Bowl appearances.

  2. They also call themselves "The Windy City". According to the weather people, they don't even make the top ten.

  3. I read somewhere that "windy city" didn't mean actual wind. It was figurative, in the same way that "hot air" is figurative.

  4. I live in NY. It has been colder than usual this winter, down to single digits on some nights. We do not leave the taps open and the pipes never freeze - I assume you are talking baout frozen pipes being the cause of the man not having water. My guess is they do not freeze here, and probably not in Chicago either, because they are buried deeper than they would be in most of TX. That, or I am missing something.

    All the best,
